Our
first church was built here in 1772. That original log structure
served as a hospital for General George Washington's troops during the
harsh winter of 1777-78 when they were camped at Valley Forge.
The original log structure was replaced with a new building in 1812.
That building was destroyed by fire in 1835. In that same year, another
church was built and dedicated. Today, we continue to worship in that
same pre-Civil War sanctuary.
As we grew in this century, we built our parsonage which was
completed in 1964. In 1971, we added our Fellowship Hall to serve the
needs of our children and young people. During the Bicentennial Year,
1976, our sanctuary was expanded and carefully restored to its present
beauty.
More recently, our church family committed to an expansion of our
mission and outreach. More than ten St. Peter's Mission Teams now reach
out to serve children, women, and men with a variety of needs in our
community, across the nation, and even around the world. St. Peter's is
a leader among churches in offering generous service to others. Today,
we are entering another exciting time in our history as we make plans to
improve and expand the space we have to serve all in our church family
and especially our growing population of children and young people.
St. Peter's Church has long been and remains a vital force in the
lives of our members and in our community. With God's help, we are a
faithful Christian community welcoming all who would become part of our
great church family.
We at St. Peter's Church trace our faith story back to the earliest
Christian church of the Apostles. Our life and faith are grounded in the
witness and experience of these first Christians.
We are also the spiritual heirs of those who were formed by the
insights of the Reformation in Germany and Switzerland. Among them were
those who came to Penn's colony in the 18th century and established here
what became known as the German Reformed Church and, later, the
Evangelical and Reformed Church.
In 1957, we became part of the United Church of Christ, a union of the
Evangelical and Reformed Church and the Congregational Christian
Churches with traces its roots back to the Pilgrims and Puritans in 17th
century New England.
Today, we continue in the spirit of our ancestors and the United
Church of Christ, acknowledging Jesus Christ as Son of God, our Savior
and Lord. We look to the Word of God in the Scriptures and depend on the
presence and power of the Holy Spirit as we claim the faith for our own
time. All who seek to live in this faith and follow Jesus are welcomed
at St. Peter's Church as our sisters and brothers. We invite you to join
us on this great adventure.
