World Change Starts with Educated Children
Dear Members & Friends of St. Peter’s UCC,
This past Sunday, we celebrated the kickoff of our newest St. Peter’s Mission Campaign called ROOM TO READ - an organization that partners with local communities throughout the world to provide educational opportunities for those who otherwise could not afford them. They believe that education is a lifelong gift that empowers people to improve their own lives today and the socioeconomic conditions for future generations.
Since its inception in 2000, Room to Read has distributed over three million books, built 425 schools, established 5,000 libraries, developed 150 computer and language labs and put 4,000 girls on long-term scholarships in places all around the world. Working together, fundraisers and local communities have touched the lives of 1.7 million children and helped their families to break the cycle of poverty one child at a time. To learn more about their work for global education, please visit their website www.roomtoread.org.
Did you know that … there are 770 million illiterate adults in the world today (two-thirds of them are women). In the country of Nepal alone, 51% of the adult population is illiterate and they can’t afford to change that because 83% of Nepalese live on less than US$2 per day. We can change the future for their children beginning today when we …
…READ FOR THOSE WHO WANT TO LEARN TO READ You are invited to join in our St. Peter’s Room to Read “READ-A-THON”. Page two of this letter is a “How to participate” informational sheet. Adults, please help the children in your family to safely and successfully participate in this fundraising project. Attached, you’ll find a Tracking Sheet and Sponsor Form that you can print out or copy. Remember, you don’t have to be a member of St. Peter’s UCC to participate – so encourage friends to join in!
…SHARE READING IN THE LOCAL COMMUNITY AS WELL We’re collecting “in good condition” used and new books for local charity organizations that help children and adults in our own community. Please bring books for ages one through one hundred and put them on the bookshelves under our ROOM TO READ Bulletin Board in Fellowship Hall. We’ll dedicate them during the worship service celebration for Room to Read on September 21st!
This is a new mission for us at St. Peter’s and we are very excited it. A Room to Read Planning committee is organizing other activities from now until September 21st, that you’ll also be invited to join in – so watch for more information as we go. And if you would be interested in being a part of their committee work, please contact Jane and Bob Breisch who are its co-chairs.
I’m looking forward to hearing from you with any questions or suggestions you want to share to help make our Room to Read “Read-a-thon” a great experience for everyone! Happy Reading and Blessings to all, Pastor Susan
Hey, kids – If you’d like to change the world & make it a better place, here’s how you can get started …
Join our Read-A-Thon!
Together, we can all make a huge difference and give the gift of education to thousands of children in Nepal. And all you have to do is Read!!!
Here’s What to Do:
1. Find Sponsors – start with your parents and get them to help you find other adults that will sponsor you as well – people like grandparents, godparents, aunts & uncles, cousins, friends, neighbors, teachers, pastors, coaches, and any other person who your parents can help you think of – these are people who will pledge a certain amount of money for every page or book you read. Add the sponsor’s name and his/her pledge to the Sponsor Form attached. Sponsors can indicate a maximum pledge as well. Remember – even small pledges help and lots of small pledges can add up to an impressive total!
2. Read - all reading you do from now through September 20th counts – whether you are reading to yourself, or to someone else, or having someone else read to you --- so everyone can participate no matter what your age or reading level!
3. Set a goal for how much money you hope to raise to help children in Nepal. Record this goal in the section at the bottom of the Sponsor Form.
4. Track your progress. Read as much as you can. It will help you learn and it will give children just like you who live thousands of miles away a chance to read and learn too! Record the books and number of pages you have read on the Tracking Sheet attached.
5. Reach your goal by the deadline - September 20th. Have your parents help you to total your pages and collect your pledges. Bring the money you raised, the Sponsor Form(s), and the Tracking Sheet to church on September 21st so that we can dedicate them during our special Room to Read celebration Worship Service.
